What matters for Odoo work
Most of the time spent on an Odoo module is not typing Python. It is knowing which model to inherit, which fields already exist across your addons, adding the access rule a new model needs, keeping __manifest__.py and __init__.py in step, and getting a module to install cleanly on the right Odoo version. An AI tool helps with Odoo to the extent it can see and check those things. We compare five tools on six points:
- Odoo knowledge: does the tool understand Odoo itself, or only what you tell it?
- Environment setup: can it get you a running Odoo for a given version?
- Scaffolding: how do you create modules, models and views?
- Review: how do you check a module before it ships?
- Editor: where it runs.
- Pricing model: how you pay, in broad terms.
| Tool | What it is | Odoo knowledge | Environment setup | Scaffolding | Review | Pricing model |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Assista IDE (Assista Coder) | A standalone IDE built for Odoo, with an AI agent inside | Odoo-aware tools: looks up a model's fields across your addons, finds a model's views, access rights and reports, checks a module for install problems | Downloads Odoo (Odoo 11 to 20), creates the virtualenv; the debugger panel adds the debug configuration | Module, model, view, report and access-right templates from a right-click menu | Module Reviewer: XML validation, security audit, pylint, install test, unit tests, on your machine | IDE and Assista Coder free; AI requests use Assista credits or your own API key |
| GitHub Copilot | An AI assistant built into GitHub and available as an extension for many editors | General purpose; knows Odoo through its models and the context you give it | No built-in Odoo setup | Through prompts and agent mode | Reviews code and pull requests | Free plan with limited features; paid plans for individuals and organisations |
| Cursor | An AI coding editor based on the VS Code codebase | General purpose; project rules and context can describe Odoo conventions | No built-in Odoo setup | Through prompts and its agent | Agent review of diffs; AI code review (Bugbot) on Premium and higher plans | Free plan with limited AI usage; paid plans |
| Claude Code | Anthropic's coding agent, in the terminal, IDE extensions, a desktop app and the web | General purpose; works from your codebase and the instructions you give it | No built-in Odoo setup | Through prompts; edits files and runs commands | Reviews and fixes through prompts | Needs a Claude subscription or an Anthropic Console account for most surfaces |
| OdooLS (no AI) | Odoo's own language server, with extensions for VS Code, PyCharm, Neovim and Zed | Odoo-specific: autocompletion, hover, go to definition and diagnostics for the framework | No built-in Odoo setup | Not included | Diagnostics as you type | Open source (LGPLv3) |
Assista IDE and Assista Coder
Assista IDE is a standalone editor for Odoo, for Windows (x64), macOS (Apple Silicon) and Linux (Snap). Its AI agent, Assista Coder, looks things up in your project before it writes: the fields and methods of a model across every addon that extends it, the views, access rights and reports that touch it, and the status of the Odoo server you started. It can check a module for problems that break installs, such as a new model with no access rule or an inherited view whose xpath matches nothing. Every change shows as a diff you accept or reject.
Around the agent, the IDE sets up an Odoo project for a version you pick, scaffolds modules from templates, and reviews a module on your machine without using AI tokens. The IDE and Assista Coder are free. AI requests use Assista credits, or your own API key from OpenRouter, OpenAI, Google or an OpenAI-compatible provider.
Best for: developers who spend most of their day in Odoo and want setup, scaffolding, review and an Odoo-aware agent in one place. Less suited to: teams that are settled in another editor; the VS Code and PyCharm helpers bring part of the tooling there instead.
GitHub Copilot
Copilot suggests code as you type, answers questions about a codebase, reviews changes and works on tasks you assign it, including from a GitHub issue through to a pull request. It runs as an extension in many editors, including VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, and you can shape its answers with repository instructions and reusable prompts. It is not specific to Odoo: what it knows about your modules comes from the code it can see and the instructions you write.
Best for: teams whose work lives on GitHub and who want one assistant across languages and editors. See the Assista vs GitHub Copilot comparison.
Cursor
Cursor is an AI coding editor based on the VS Code codebase, so VS Code settings and extensions import in one step. Its agent plans and builds features, fixes bugs and reviews changes, and rules, skills and MCP servers let you add project conventions. Like Copilot it is general purpose; Odoo knowledge comes from your rules and your code.
Best for: developers who want an AI-first editor for many kinds of project. See Assista vs Cursor.
Claude Code
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent. It runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains extensions, in a desktop app and on the web, and works across many files and tools to build features and fix bugs. It is strong at multi-step work in a repository; for Odoo it works from your code and the instructions you give it, and it does not set up Odoo for you.
Best for: developers comfortable directing an agent from the terminal across a large codebase.
OdooLS: the baseline without AI
The Odoo Language Server, from Odoo itself, gives autocompletion, hover, go to definition and diagnostics for the Odoo framework, with extensions for VS Code, PyCharm, Neovim and Zed. It writes no code for you, but it knows Odoo, and it can run next to any of the AI tools above. Our Odoo Helper for VS Code covers different ground: code templates, snippets and module scaffolding rather than language-server features.
How to choose
- You build Odoo modules most days: try Assista IDE; it is free, and setup, scaffolding and review are built in.
- You work across many stacks and want one assistant: Copilot, Cursor or Claude Code, with OdooLS for Odoo-aware language features.
- You want to stay in VS Code or PyCharm: add the Odoo Helper for VS Code or PyCharm next to whichever assistant you use.
Whichever tool you pick, review what it writes the way you would review a colleague's module. Our guide to AI for Odoo development covers prompting with Odoo context and checking the result; the Assista Coder documentation lists exactly what its Odoo tools do.
