The short answer
Copilot is the broader tool: it suggests code as you type, answers questions about a codebase, reviews pull requests, and can take a task from a GitHub issue to a pull request, in whichever editor you use. Assista is the deeper tool for Odoo: its agent looks up Odoo models, views and access rights in your project before it writes, and the IDE sets up, scaffolds and reviews Odoo modules. If Odoo is your main work, Assista saves the steps Copilot leaves to you. If it is one stack among many, Copilot plus Odoo-aware tooling is a reasonable mix.

| Scope | Odoo only | Any language or framework |
| Odoo knowledge | Odoo-aware lookups and checks: model fields across your addons, related views, access rights and reports, install problems | From the code it can see and the repository instructions you write |
| Odoo environment | Downloads Odoo (Odoo 11 to 20), creates the virtualenv; the debugger panel adds the debug configuration | No built-in Odoo setup |
| Scaffolding | Module, model, view, report and access-right templates | Through prompts and agent mode |
| Review | Module Reviewer on your machine: XML, security, pylint, install test, unit tests; no AI tokens | Reviews code and pull requests |
| Pricing | IDE and Assista Coder free; AI requests use Assista credits or your own key | Copilot Free; paid plans from $10 USD per month for individuals (as of October 2026) |

Where Assista is the better fit
Odoo context without writing it yourself
Copilot gets better answers when you describe your project's structure and conventions in instructions and prompts. Assista Coder starts with that knowledge for Odoo: it lists a model's fields and methods across every addon that extends it, finds the views, access rights, record rules and reports that touch a model, and checks a module for install problems such as a new model with no access rule or a manifest entry pointing to a missing file.
The Odoo work around the code
Assista IDE downloads Odoo for the version you pick (Odoo 11 to 20), creates a virtual environment (the debugger panel sets up debugging), scaffolds modules from templates, and runs a module review (XML validation, security audit, pylint, install test and unit tests) on your machine without AI tokens. None of that is part of Copilot.
Where Copilot is the better fit
- Your editor of choice. Copilot runs as an extension in many editors, including VS Code and JetBrains IDEs. Assista Coder lives in Assista IDE.
- Work that lives on GitHub. Copilot can pick up an issue, work on it and return a pull request for review, inside your existing GitHub workflow.
- Many languages. One assistant for Odoo, your front end and everything else.
Using them together
If you stay in VS Code or PyCharm with Copilot, add the Odoo Helper for VS Code or the Odoo Helper for PyCharm for Odoo code templates, snippets and module scaffolding next to it. If you want Odoo setup, review and an Odoo-aware agent, use Assista IDE for your Odoo projects; it is free, and AI requests use Assista credits or your own API key.
Try it on a real module
Download Assista IDE, open an addon you know well, and ask Assista Coder what touches one of its models. Compare the answer with what you would have had to gather by hand. The Assista Coder documentation lists every Odoo tool it uses.
