Comparison

Assista vs Cursor for Odoo development

Cursor is a strong general-purpose AI editor. Assista IDE is narrower on purpose: it is built around Odoo. Here is what that difference means for Odoo modules.

Updated . Assista is our product. Cursor facts come from Cursor's own documentation, checked October 2026.

The short answer

If most of your work is Odoo, Assista IDE gives you things Cursor does not have out of the box: an agent with Odoo-specific lookups and checks, a project set up for the Odoo version you pick, module templates, and a module reviewer. If you work across many stacks, Cursor covers more ground, and you teach it Odoo through rules and context. Plenty of developers will reasonably use both.

Where Assista IDE is the better fit

It looks things up in Odoo before it writes

Ask Assista Coder to add a computed margin field to sale.order and it first lists the model's fields and methods as they are across every addon in your workspace, including the modules that extend it. It can find a model's views, access rights, record rules and reports together, read the status of the Odoo server you started, and check a module for the mistakes that break installs: a new model with no access rule, a manifest entry pointing to a missing file, an inherited view whose xpath matches nothing. A general editor can do the same work if you point it at the right files; Assista does the lookups itself.

Setup and scaffolding are built in

Pick an Odoo version from Odoo 11 to 20 and a folder, and the IDE downloads Odoo, creates a virtual environment with the packages that version needs; the debugger panel then sets up debugging. Module, model, view, report and access-right templates are on a right-click menu, and new files are added to __init__.py and the manifest for you.

Review without spending tokens

The Module Reviewer runs XML validation, a security audit, pylint, an install test and unit tests on your machine and gives you a report. It uses no AI tokens; it needs Docker or your own dev server.

Where Cursor is the better fit

  • Many stacks, one editor. Cursor is general purpose. If you also build front ends, services or tools outside Odoo, one AI editor for all of it is simpler.
  • Your VS Code setup moves over. Cursor is based on the VS Code codebase and imports VS Code settings and extensions in one step.
  • Team and cloud workflows. Cursor offers cloud agents, automations and integrations with GitHub, GitLab, Slack, Linear and others.
  • Model choice. Cursor lists models from several providers. Assista Coder uses Assista's hosted models or the provider key you add.

Using both

The two are separate editors, so the common pattern is to use Assista IDE for Odoo projects and Cursor for everything else. Because Assista IDE and Assista Coder are free, trying Assista on one Odoo module costs you only the AI requests you make, on Assista credits or your own key.

Try it on a real module

Download Assista IDE, open an existing addon and ask Assista Coder to explain a model or add a field. The Assista Coder documentation lists each Odoo tool it uses, and the AI for Odoo development guide covers how to review what any AI tool writes.
